The Majority in Parliament states that steps have been taken by the government to ensure the release of civilians arrested over their alleged attacks on some National Security Operatives in Garu in the Upper East Region.
Eight persons were arrested during attacks on residents of Garu and Tempane by the military last Sunday, October 29, 2023.
The brutality meted out to the residents was alleged to be in retaliation for an attack on some National Security officers.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament in Accra on Friday, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, noted that though the suspects had been remanded in custody, efforts were underway to have them released and transported back to Garu.
“We were told that these gentlemen were in custody, and I was to follow up on this. True to it, I followed up, and the Ministry of National Security assured me that everything would be done to ensure that the rightsof those who were arrested were upheld. True to their word, they made me a part of their engagement with them, and although the court had remanded them into lawful custody, I would want to inform the house that steps have been taken to ensure that these gentlemen are released and taken back to Garu.”
“The Regional Minister and other stakeholders from the region were given access to these gentlemen, and I found them to be hearty and in good spirits. They did not complain of any molestation or any form of abuse of their rights while in lawful custody while in cells,” he stated.
