The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has appealed to Ghanaians to be mindful of their comments on the judgment of illegal miner Aisha Huang.
This comes in response to some alleged information circulating among sections of the public in reaction to the judgment.
Aisha Huang was sentenced to four and a half years in jail on Monday, December 4, 2023, after being found guilty of mining without a license. The court also imposed a fine of GH¢48,000.
The judge, after carefully considering the arguments from the prosecution and defense, found the accused guilty. Notably, the accused had previously been released on similar charges.
However, the judge could only impose a four-year sentence because the law under which she was prosecuted belonged to the old legal regime, with five years as the highest sentence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Dame urged the public to be mindful of the reasons for the judgment and “desist from comments which not only jeopardise the sound and efficient administration of justice but also undermine the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).”
