Today, we gather to bid our final farewells to a woman whose presence illuminated our lives and whose absence has left an irreplaceable void – my mother, Mama Rose, the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. With a heavy heart and tearful eyes, I endeavour to capture the essence of a woman who not only brought me into this world but also, against all odds, guided the trajectory of my life, single-handedly raising five children with grace and determination after the loss of her beloved husband in 1981.
For over four decades, Mama played the roles of my mother, father, prayer warrior, friend, confidante, advisor, defender, and anchor. Let me elaborate: my father passed away when I was just a few months old, leaving me without a paternal figure. Despite the absence of those who could have filled that role, Mama proved more than sufficient, ensuring my happiness without missing a beat.
At the age of 14, during my formative teenage years, Mama had a conversation that changed the course of my life. She told me, “My beloved son, you are on your own. You cannot rely on the successes of your older siblings; you must forge your own path to success.” This conversation sparked a renewed sense of purpose, compelling me to pursue an uncharted path with unwavering commitment.
I have never made a significant life decision, participated in a job interview, or boarded a flight – not even a 30-minute one – without consulting Mama for her prayers. Whenever others gossiped about me to Mama, she defended me with extreme positivity, declaring, “Thou shalt not utter a negative word about my beloved Obofo (Gabriel), which means Angel in the Ghanaian language.”
Mama’s intelligence was remarkable; our conversations spanned diverse topics, from corporate and social issues to relationship matters. She never judged me, but consistently encouraged me to draw closer to God, leading by example. Without a doubt, Mama was stainless – free from drama, controversy, greed, or hate. If God needed someone to demonstrate His existence, Mama was the perfect embodiment, representing Him through countless miracles, incredible kindness, and love for all, even those who made her journey painful and laborious.
Mama Rose wasn’t just a person; she embodied a force of love, strength, and compassion. Her life was a tapestry woven with threads of selflessness, resilience, and boundless care. In her, I found not just a guiding light but also unwavering support, laughter, and wisdom. Reflecting on our countless shared moments, I recall the reassuring tone in her voice during challenging times and the joy that emanated from her during life’s triumphs. Her prayers were a constant source of comfort, and her steadfast faith in God provided strength that sustained our family through thick and thin.
As the youngest, I witnessed Mama’s quiet moments of courage, where she faced the world with a smile, concealing the hardships she bore. Her love knew no bounds, and her guidance was a compass steering me through life’s uncharted waters.
I could continue indefinitely; even a 600-page book or a two-hour movie wouldn’t suffice to encapsulate Mama’s life of grace and resilience. We require an entire series to do justice to Mama’s extraordinary life.
No more “I love you, love you, I love you soooo much” at the end of our calls. Oh, my Mama, my everything. Though the prospect of facing life without you seems daunting, I am certain that you will be smiling down on me from heaven. While I lost my earthly mother, I gained a personal angel – Angel Rose watches over me. It was a rare privilege to have a mother like you. I am grateful.
Today, I celebrate the remarkable life of a woman who has been an extraordinary presence in my life, defying odds and embracing her roles as a mother, grandmother, church leader, and friend with grace, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. She gifts me with resilience, the beauty of selfless love, and the strength to face life head-on. In her most famous words, “Our gracious and ever faithful God will sustain us.”
Rest in eternal peace in the bosom of the Lord, Mama Rose. Your memory will inspire and comfort me for all the days of my life.
With Love,
Your Beloved Last Born, Gabriel
