Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has assured that all the concerns raised by Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited will be resolved before Christmas to curb any potential power cuts.
He disclosed that the power distribution company has been working peacefully with the other Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and would like to maintain such a healthy working relationship with any other IPP. Therefore, he will liaise with the dissatisfied Sunon Asogli to ensure their demands are addressed appropriately.
Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited briefly and indefinitely shut down its 560MW plant on Monday evening.
Sunon Asogli in a letter addressed to ECG, indicated that the decision to shut down “became necessary due to avoidable delays in payment from the GoG/Electricity Company of Ghana for power supplied, as well as, the unproductive engagements to find an amicable solution” to the indebtedness.”
Assuring the general public of a stable power supply, ECG’s MD told Nathan Quao on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Tuesday that a meeting will be scheduled with Sunon Asogli before the end of the week to find solutions to their concerns.
“All the other IPPs are comfortable and are working with the ECG. Sunon Asogli just came up, and Ghanaians should be assured that the issues will be resolved before Christmas so they can enjoy the festivity,” Mr. Mahama said.
Shortly after shutting down, Sunon Asogli came out with an update that it was suspending its action for a week as the Minister of Finance and Minister of State assured it of paying the $60 million owed in two tranches starting next week.
