The leadership of Organized Labour in the Ashanti Region is urging its members to actively participate in the February 13 protest against the 15 percent VAT on Electricity.
Organized Labour, after a meeting in Kumasi, declared their readiness for the protest, insisting that there has been no official communication regarding the complete reversal of the policy to impose a 15 percent VAT on Electricity.
The leaders of the various unions have announced the route for the protest and said all necessary arrangements, including security, have been put in place for the exercise.
However, the union is expected to meet with the Ghana Police Service to officially deliberate on the route despite their announcement.
“We sent a letter to the police yesterday, so they have assured us. They said they’ll call us. We are waiting for them to call us to meet and deliberate on the route.”
The Ashanti Regional Secretary of TUC, Augustine Adongo Apanmbila, speaking to Citi News’ Hafiz Tijani during the meeting, called on members to actively engage in the demonstration.
“We are expecting a huge number, both private sector workers, public sector workers, formal and informal workers. We know the impact of the 15 percent tax, and we know everybody is feeling it, and the people will be ready to join us.”
He added, “The outcome of this meeting is that Organized Labour in the Ashanti Region, we are ever prepared for the demonstration on 13th February 2024. We have already come out with our route march starting from the cultural centre, through Kejetia, in front of ECG, to the post office, and then the KMA, and then we would end up at RCC.”
