Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has raised concerns about the lack of media coverage and discussions on the Bawku conflict in the Upper East Region.
President Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered to Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo shared his concerns about the financial resources spent on resolving the Bawku conflict.
He expressed regret that these funds, which could have been used for other developmental projects, were instead used to ensure security in and around Bawku in the Upper East Region. The President described the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in the area as “troubling.”
In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on the Big Issue on Citi TV, the Anyaa-Sowutuom MP criticized the media for not highlighting the issues faced by the residents of Bawku.
Dr Adomako Kissi stated that the issue gained prominence after the President voiced some concerns. He stressed the importance of the media in advocating for the resolution of the conflict in the troubled area.
“Listening to the president and going back to the document, I think the president is in touch with the people and that is obvious in the way he touched on Bawku, which for me was not a front-burner issue. I think the media houses in this country have been a bit silent on the issues and day-to-day challenges of the people of Bawku.
“So, for the president to bring that as a front-burner issue and the way he also talked about our state of security in this country should not be overlooked. In the sense that our neighboring countries which are very close are going through coup d’etats and things of that sort.
And I think that his leadership in ECOWAS is also shown through the State of the Nation Address. He touched on the fact that we have a constitution that has worked well for Ghana and also re-echoed the need for us to make sure that the three arms of government are working and to invest in it,” he stated.
