The Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, and Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South has committed to enhancing the ‘Operation Get off the Street for better lives’ campaign to address the issue of street children in the country.
Her statement responds to the pressing concern of effectively curbing the presence of children found on the streets.
During her vetting on Tuesday, March 5, Dakoa Newman acknowledged the initiatives undertaken by the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, to ensure that these children are no longer seen on the streets.
Mrs. Newman noted that although some children were repatriated to their home countries and others reunited with their parents, the issue persists.
As a solution, she pledged to conduct extensive stakeholder consultations and revamp the programmes initiated by the former minister with updated and sufficient data.
“Once I’m given the nod, I think further stakeholder consultation needs to be had. We can look at revamping those programmes that worked; however, it wasn’t sustainable because they are back on the street. We can engage in lessons learned, find out what worked and didn’t work and embark on it again but this time with the requisite information to ensure that this time once we get them off the street, they stay off the street, they stay at home, or they stay in the schools in which they’ve been enrolled in.”
