The Ministry of Education has disclosed that it is making efforts to introduce Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in kindergarten schools across the country.
According to the Ministry, integrating STEM education into the kindergarten curriculum is imperative to fast-track the achievement of learning outcomes.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, at a public lecture at the University of Media Arts and Communication, themed ‘Education for Development and Social Change: Opportunities and Prospects in TVET and Stem.’
He said, “From primary two to primary three they come and get themselves involved in STEM so that we can create a pipeline of STEM from the basic school up. We have begun a programme to ensure that STEM is not the preset of Junior High or Senior High School but it starts from kindergarten up”.
Dr. Adutwum also indicated that the Ministry is building several kindergarten facilities and equipping the existing ones with modern gadgets for improved STEM education.
“We have kindergartens that we have fully equipped with modern gadgets to enable them to engage in digital learning. A number of them are being built across the country. We believe that the needed investment has to be made.”
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has over the years expressed passion for STEM education, emphasizing that it stems from the impact it has made in other parts of the world, leading to the transformation of their economies.
He believes that STEM education will position Ghana at the forefront of countries that leverage new technologies to address societal challenges.
