The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has declared that the forthcoming deployment of the 5G network in Ghana is a significant stride towards realising a fully digitalised Ghana by 2030.
Unveiling the government’s imminent plans to roll out the 5G network, Mrs Owusu-Ekulful said, “The deployment of the 5G network is a significant step towards achieving a digitalised Ghana by 2030.”
The network’s rollout is a collaborative effort involving seven industry players, including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, and Tech Mahindra, along with two telcos – AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.
These partners have come together to form the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which has been granted a 5G license. The NGIC is anticipated to launch 5G services across Ghana within the next six months, with plans for subsequent expansion to other parts of Africa.
The NGIC, as the first 5G Mobile Broadband Shared Infrastructure Entity, will construct a nationwide 4G/5G network. Additionally, it will collaborate with the telcos to introduce affordable 4G/5G-enabled FWA CPEs and smartphones in Ghana within this calendar year.
The partnership’s objective is to improve the lives of Ghanaians by introducing digital services in education, healthcare, and digital payment transactions through P2P (peer-to-peer), P2M (peer-to-merchant) and M2M (merchant-to-merchant) systems. This initiative aims to reduce the digital divide and promote financial inclusion.
The Communications and Digitalisation Minister said the deployment would represent a significant leap, opening up new possibilities for individuals, businesses, and the government.
She further elaborated that the 5G network will offer faster internet speeds, lower latency, and the capacity to connect more devices simultaneously, thereby enhancing the quality of online services.
The Minister also reassured that the government is closely collaborating with network providers to ensure the successful deployment of the 5G network.
She underscored the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all Ghanaians, irrespective of their location, have access to high-quality internet services.
