The International Justice Mission (IJM) Ghana has urged stakeholders to remain committed to ending human trafficking in the country.
IJM is a global organisation that protects people who are vulnerable to violence. IJM has been working in Ghana since 2015 to tackle the issue of human trafficking on Lake Volta by assisting the government in rescuing and restoring victims, holding perpetrators accountable and helping strengthen public justice systems.
Speaking at the organisation’s national justice conference in Accra on Thursday, the Country Director of IJM, Anita Budu called on government officials, law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the public to join hands in the fight against human trafficking.
The conference was held on the theme “The National Fight Against Human Trafficking; Reflecting on the Journey So Far.”
The IJM Ghana Country Director emphasised that this heinous crime was not just a violation of human rights, but also hampered the social and economic development of the country.
Ms Budu highlighted the need for stronger laws and stricter enforcement to deter potential traffickers.
She also stressed the importance of education and awareness campaigns to inform the public about the signs of human trafficking and how to report suspected cases.
She further called for increased support for victims, including access to legal aid, psychological support, and skills training to help them reintegrate into society.
The conference brought together key government and non-government actors in the fight against human trafficking in Ghana to reflect on collaborative national efforts made towards ending human trafficking.
