The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says that details of all arrested teachers in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be forwarded to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Sixteen teachers and invigilators have so far been arrested at various examination centres across the country for offences such as assisting candidates by taking pictures of examination papers and sharing them on social media.
Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, noted that despite these malpractices, the examination has been largely successful, especially in the Council’s deployment of examination papers to hard-to-reach communities.
“On the part of the Council where we had the mandate to compile questions, print them and distribute same to all the examination centres, I believe that we scored a pass mark because we were able to reach everybody.
“The action of taking snapshots of questions and posting them on social media is criminal according to the WAEC law and these are people who have been picked up and handed over to the police. So, the police would handle them appropriately. Besides that, we intend also to send a list of teachers to the GES and our hope is that GES will also take action in order that these people are properly dealt with by the rules of the Service,” he said.
