Organised Labour has clarified that it did not call for the dissolution of the board of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
This comes after calls were made by Ghana Federation of Labour, a member of the Organised Labour for a complete overhaul of the board, and the immediate removal of the top management team over the botched decision to off-load 60% of its shares in four hotels to a private entity owned by a minister of state.
Although SSNIT has announced the termination of the sale of these hotels, the issue has continued to generate controversy.
In an interview Umaru Sanda on the Eyewitness News on July 15, the Director of Research and Policy for the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, emphasised that the outcome of such an engagement could lead to various actions, including the potential restructuring of the board and management of SSNIT.
“Organised Labour did not make that call specifically. Some elements within organised labour in a statement called for the board to be dissolved. I must admit that in our discussion these things came up but in our final statement we issued today, we are calling for an engagement with the board, which means that there must be a board in place for you to have the engagement with.”
“But the outcome of that engagement could result in many things, including restructuring of the board and management of SSNIT; that one nobody can determine what the outcome will be,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, has defended the company’s board members and management amidst calls for their resignation.
According to Osafo-Maafo, the board members and management of SSNIT have done enough to justify their continued tenure in office.
