NPP condemns ‘state-sponsored persecution’ of members, calls for immediate action

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as politically motivated intimidation and harassment of its members by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, through the alleged misuse of state security institutions.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 23, the NPP called for an immediate end to these actions, labeling them a direct attack on Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law.

Arrest of Adenta Kumi Sparks Outrage

On the morning of Friday, May 23, 2025, heavily armed operatives, believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the residence of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi.”

According to the NPP, six masked officers wielding AK-47 rifles forcibly arrested him in a manner they described as “Rambo-style intimidation.”

Kumi, a known party activist, had recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating petitions related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. His petition cited alleged misconduct within the investigative body.

The NPP claims his sudden arrest is an attempt to silence him and obstruct justice.

“The response of the state should have been to address the concerns raised in the petition through due process, not through intimidation and force,” the party stated. “This is a clear affront to democratic accountability.”

Raid on Chairman Wontumi’s Residence

The NPP also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

Armed men reportedly stormed his residence despite prior communication between him and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The chairman had previously informed authorities of his inability to appear for questioning due to medical reasons but assured them of his availability on May 26, 2025. The party labeled the raid as “nothing short of political harassment.”

Calls for Public Action

The NPP has called on Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and democratic institutions to condemn what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition voices and undermine the nation’s democratic values.

“These actions violate the fundamental rights of citizens and threaten transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law. We urge all defenders of democracy to speak out against this political persecution,” the statement concluded.
