The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced that Qatar will inject 1.5 billion dollars into Ghana’s food production sector by November 2025.

Under the arrangement, Qatar will secure and irrigate farmlands in Ghana, allocate them to farmers for large-scale cultivation, and subsequently purchase the produce for export to Qatar.

The Ministry says the partnership will create more than 2,500 direct jobs and significantly transform Ghana’s economy by boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening the export value chain.

Announcing the initiative at an interaction with journalists, in Accra on Friday August 29, Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, said the investment underscores the Mahama government’s commitment to positioning agriculture as the backbone of economic growth and job creation.

“$1.5billion is going into food production. You know Qatar does not have the land to produce the food to feed its population. Now what they want to do with us is that they will make the funds available, they will secure land, irrigate the land, allocate the land to the farmers to produce the food and then they will buy the food and export to Qatar.

“Under that arrangement agriculture will be agribusiness. It will be a money making venture and everybody will be interested in doing that. In fact we are done with them and the assurance is that their German technical people will be in the country to start with the implementation right from November,December,” Mr Opoku said.
