Protecting the Cedi is a shared duty — Bank of Ghana Governor

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has emphasised that safeguarding the value of the Cedi is a collective national responsibility, not the mandate of a single institution.

Speaking at the Currency Anniversary Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, as part of the Cedi@60 celebrations, Dr. Johnson Asiama said every Ghanaian has a role to play in strengthening confidence in the national currency and supporting the stability of the economy.

According to him, protecting the Cedi goes beyond monetary policy and regulatory efforts, extending to the everyday actions and attitudes of citizens, businesses, and institutions.

While delivering his aspirations for the currency, Dr. Asiama said: “It is my hope that every Ghanaian—from the child learning to count, to the trader serving her community, to the entrepreneur building something new—can continue to hold the Cedi with unwavering confidence and pride.”

He stressed that currency stability must be viewed as a national duty.

“May we always remember that protecting the Cedi is not the task of any one institution,” he said. “It is a shared endeavour—an endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future.”

Dr. Asiama reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to policies that promote monetary stability, but noted that long-term confidence in the Cedi requires collective discipline, responsible economic behaviour, and national unity.
