New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant and MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has claimed that his strategic seating position at Thursday’s Peace Pact Ceremony was the “divine intervention” that prevented a public confrontation between his fellow contenders.
Addressing party delegates from Manso Nkwanta and Manso Adubiase during his second campaign tour of the Ashanti Region on Friday, Dr. Achempong suggested that the body language of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong signalled high tensions that could have marred the January 22 event.
Dr. Achempong, who is campaigning ahead of the January 31 primaries, told supporters that his presence served as a vital buffer during the ceremony held in Accra.
“I believe that it was God’s intervention that made me sit on the second chair, which was in between number one and number three. If I had not held on to the person sitting on chair number one, what would have happened there would have been nothing to write home about,” he asserted.
He noted that while the public saw a formal ceremony on their television screens, the underlying friction was palpable. “I hope you all saw it on TV. I urged them to smile. It demonstrates that there are problems in the party. When Number One managed to smile a little, Number Three also started frowning,” he added.
Acknowledging that the NPP remains gripped by internal dissatisfaction and unresolved grievances, the Abetifi lawmaker framed his intervention as a preview of his leadership style.
He argued that the party requires a leader who can manage volatile egos and restore order before the general elections.
“When I win this election, we will restore discipline in the party,” he promised the delegates.
As the race enters its final week, Dr. Achempong urged the Antoakrom delegates to evaluate his record of stability and strategic thinking, calling on them to vote for him to lead the party to victory and ensure a “reset” of internal party harmony.
