Bawumia: My victory proves NPP rejects tribalism, religious bigotry

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says his victory in the party’s January 31 presidential primary reflects the NPP’s rejection of tribalism and religious intolerance.

Speaking at an Islamic thanksgiving and prayer service at the National Mosque in Accra on Friday, February 13, Dr. Bawumia stated that he deliberately chose not to respond to what he described as false and ethnocentric attacks during the campaign, guided by the teachings of the Holy Quran.

He said his competence and track record ultimately earned him re-election as the party’s presidential candidate.

“Quran 41:34 tells us, and I quote, ‘Repel evil with what is better, repel evil with what is better.’ Furthermore, we should leave the ultimate judgment to God. It is in accordance with His teachings that I chose not to respond to all the lies and insults.

“Thankfully, God’s mighty will was shown on January 31, 2026, when He rewarded me with a stunning victory at the primaries.

“I was overjoyed with the overwhelming nature of the victory because it showed very clearly that the NPP is not a tribal party, and it also showed that the NPP is not a religiously bigoted party. The delegates of the NPP demonstrated that our party votes on the basis of competence, capability, vision, character, humility, integrity, and tolerance—not on the basis of tribe or religion.”

Dr. Bawumia further expressed confidence in the NPP’s prospects in the upcoming general election and urged party members and leaders to work diligently to secure victory.
