Emeritus Professor of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Takyiwaa Manuh, has been named as one of the recipients of the 2023 Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
Professor Takyiwaa Manuh is one of twelve people named as winners of the prestigious award given in recognition of her advocacy toward upholding the rights of citizens.
The winners were announced by the Foreign Ministers of Germany and France, Annalena Baerbock and Catherine Colonna.
The prize winners head non-governmental organizations and are lawyers, journalists, or activists working to defend the inalienable rights of each and every human being.
They stand up for those whose voices would often not be heard without them, such as women, refugees, LGBTIQ+ people, and prisoners. They are committed to the cause of justice, political participation, and unbiased reporting in the media, often risking their own freedom, frequently even their lives, under the most difficult conditions.
The other winners include: Fadel Abdulghany of Syria, Marianela Balbi Ochoa of Venezuela, Chow Hang-Tung, SAR Hong Kong, China, Danièle Darlan of the Central African Republic, Choman Hardi of Iraq, Gisèle Khoury of Lebanon, Hanna Machińska of Poland, Anny Modi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Oluwaseun Osowobi of Nigeria, and Valery Wichman of the Cook Islands.
