The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana is calling for an extension of the deadline for the linkage of SIM cards to Ghana cards or Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) following the mass blocking of SIM cards for several mobile money agents nationwide.
The Chamber of Telecommunications had set a deadline of February 1 for Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) to coordinate with agents for linking their accounts with either the Ghana Card or TIN.
The president of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, Dela Dunstan Abotsi, speaking to Citi News’ Sheba Araba Benin, underscored challenges faced by some agents, saying there are ongoing efforts to compile the total number of blocked agents.
He said, “It is something that most of us might have done, but we did not know that some of our colleagues don’t have a Ghana card. So these possible scenarios were not put on the table. There are some who do not have a TIN number, and some do not have a business certificate, so there are many possible scenarios that are not on the table. And in Ghana, we have this familiarity, where some people have registered their SIMs with the details of their dead relatives, and they now need to do a change of ownership.”
He further indicated, “But take note that we like this new system; it is coming to sanitize our system, which is something that we have always wanted done. There are a lot of persons who pretend to be agents, and we now have the process to take out the wrong people from our system.”
