The British Council and Wikimedia Foundation have successfully organized the Ghana Skills for Success event.
The event, themed “Improving Media and Information Literacy and Factual Writing,” aimed at supporting teachers to develop media and information literacy and factual writing skills and incorporate them into their teaching in Ghana. This was achieved by integrating elements of the Ghanaian curriculum with factual writing skills.
The project also aimed to equip students with the necessary skills to improve digital literacy and manage exposure to misinformation.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the closure event of the Skills for Success project, Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council Nigeria, explained that the course focused on harnessing the power of online resources, particularly Wikipedia, to enable student teachers to validate information, engage in factual writing, and facilitate collaborative learning through the platform.
Explaining why the project targeted tutors at the colleges of education, Mr. Onyemerela highlighted that the British Council is a strong advocate of continuous professional development for teachers while in-service.
“The reason being that, while we deeply recognize the importance of continuous professional development for teachers while in-service, which the British Council strongly supports through our various educational initiatives, we believe that implementing Skills for Success will equip student teachers with this knowledge from the onset of their careers during their teaching practice and throughout their entire career.”
