The Affirmative Action Bill Coalition has revealed intentions to protest over the prolonged delay in the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.
The Coalition emphasized raising awareness among policymakers to prompt swift action.
Speaking to Citi News, the Convener of the Coalition, Sheila Minka-Premo (Esq) said her office is currently consulting stakeholders to finalize their decision.
“We want to draw attention to the need to speed up the process of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill. We want to draw attention to policymakers that it is a very important bill that needs to be passed into law.
“In this country sometimes when you are trying to push your agenda and it seems to have slowed down sometimes the picketing turns to put some kind of energy into the whole process. We are consulting with stakeholders so that everything will be done well.”
Meanwhile, Sheila Minka-Premo (Esq) asserted that the bill will be passed this year as the Coalition is actively involved in various lobbying efforts.
“We will continue with our lobbying with parliament. We have already met the speaker. We will try and speak to the speaker again. We met the previous majority leader. We hope to see the new one as well as the minority leader. So, we will keep lobbying.”
The Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill, 2023 was laid in Parliament in October 2023, though the bill has been in the works since 2011. The bill, when passed into law, will address the apparent marginalization of women in key decision-making spaces in Ghana by ensuring a representation of at least 30% of women in public life.
