Kwadaso Onion Market traders are currently facing relocation as armed security personnel, following a directive by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), have begun evicting them from their current location. The traders have resisted the move, arguing that the new site provided by the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly is insufficient to accommodate their numbers.
On Monday, April 22, 2024, security personnel supervised the relocation of traders and the demolition of market structures after the deadline given by REGSEC elapsed.
Despite the demolition and cordoned-off area, some traders have continued trading on the pavements. The security has issued a notice for traders to vacate the pavements by the close of Tuesday.
Several traders who spoke to Citi News expressed their concerns about the new location’s inadequacy for their trading activities.
One trader stated, “The new place is too small, and our numbers are huge. They have pulled down over 300 sheds, and the sheds that will be erected are less than the number of traders being relocated.”
Another trader added, “They are asking us to move to Atwima Takyiman, and the new place is too small for us. We have been here for years, and we never knew this relocation could happen so soon.”
In response to the situation, a truck loaded with onions was directed to the new site designated for the traders’ relocation.
However, the owners of the goods ordered the driver to leave the place as they were unwilling to trade at the new area.
For now, the traders are waiting for a final decision from their leadership on the way forward.
