The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has assured the 42 companies awaiting tax waivers under the One-District-One-Factory initiative that their investments will be safeguarded.
In 2021, the Ministry of Finance initiated procedures to secure tax exemptions amounting to approximately $335,072,712.13 for these 42 companies as part of the government’s One District One Factory initiative.
During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the delay in approving the tax exemptions, which were applied for three years ago.
“I want to assure the investing community that we will do everything that we have to do to ensure that their investments do not go to waste,” he pledged.
In response to the Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson’s scrutiny of the companies, Afenyo-Markin questioned why companies without issues could not be cleared.
“Scrutinizing should not lead to a zero-sum outcome. Scrutinize, but with speed. Three years is too long a time. I know what he’s talking about. We are saying that you don’t have a complete basket of bad nuts. There may be some that you don’t have a problem with at all. Why don’t you clear those and take your time to deal with the difficult ones?”
He expressed confidence that the finance minister would expedite the process.
“I’m quite sure that the finance committee will do what is required of them,” he told host Bernard Avle.
The Minority Leader said they saved the country $150 million with their scrutiny of the assessments of the companies.
