The Minister of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has urged city planners to redesign drainage systems to address water management challenges in urban areas.
This follows recent pockets of flooding across Accra after heavy downpours, leaving residents vulnerable whenever it rains.
Speaking to Channel One News, Mr Korsah called for redesigning and reorganising settlements to improve water drainage.
According to the Minister, existing settlements face water management issues due to inadequate drain sizes, which become overwhelmed when heavy volumes of water flow in.
The Minister highlighted the importance of expanding or replacing smaller drains under the Ghana Rural Integrated Development Programme (GARID) to manage water flow effectively.
He also noted that technical experts must assess areas case-by-case to determine the necessary solutions, including covering storm drains that harm communities.
“As a country, in pursuit of development, you have to redesign, reorganise and so a settlement that for me had fewer challenges with water due to the drain size, once human settlements come in, the volumes that we see, then that becomes a problem.
“GARID’s programme takes care of that in expanding or replacing drains that are smaller so that it can effectively do.”
