Ghanaian entrepreneur and adventurer, Michael Amankwa, popularly known as Don Milla, has successfully climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe, standing at 5,642 meters.
This accomplishment comes on the heels of his previous triumph, summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, which stands at 5,895 meters.
Don Milla is believed to be the first Ghanaian to have conquered both Kilimanjaro and Elbrus, showcasing his determination and perseverance.
His ambition does not stop there, as he aims to complete the prestigious Seven Summits challenge, which involves climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents.
His next goal is to tackle the mighty Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, standing at 8,849 meters.
The seven-day-long journey started with several challenges however, Don Milla was determined to achieve his heights. Surprisingly, Don Milla’s hiking backpack containing some essential tools including some Ghanaian food was missing.
Undeterred, he persevered through the obstacles, filling out a lost and found form in Russian with the help of his driver, Pasha.
Despite exhaustion and discomfort from ill-fitting rented boots, Don Milla joined his teammates for a six-hour acclimatisation hike to Terskol Waterfalls, reaching 2,800 meters.
He reflected on the experience, saying, “Through all the challenges, I kept going, inspired by the beauty of nature and the goal of reaching the summit of Mount Elbrus. The journey taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance, even when the path is difficult.”
On the second day of his Mount Elbrus expedition, Don Milla faced his fears and pushed his limits, hiking for 8 hours and 41 minutes to reach an altitude of 3,153 meters.
Although feeling intimidated by the massive snowy peak, he persevered, overcoming pain and discomfort to achieve his goal. The language was also a barrier as Don Milla and his team could not express themselves in the Russian language when they visited a market.
On day three, Don Milla conquered exhaustion and reached new heights on Mount Elbrus despite only getting 4 hours and 15 minutes of sleep, hiking a total of 3,053 meters in 6 hours and 28 minutes.
He and his team even took a dip in a pristine lake along the way, braving cold water. Don Milla’s determination and perseverance paid off, as he completed the challenging hike and prepared to move on to Camp 1 for the next chapter of his adventure.
Embracing the Challenge: Day four Acclimatisation on Mount Elbrus: The Ghanaian adventurer reached Camp 1 on Mount Elbrus, marking a significant milestone in his journey to conquer the highest peak in Europe.
After a challenging acclimatisation hike to 3280 meters, Don Milla and his team learned critical skills such as using harnesses and fixed ropes, packing backpacks, and fixing boots with crampons.
Day five was amazing as the expedition continued with barrel beds and snow axes. Don Milla had reached Camp 2 on Mount Elbrus, moving closer to his goal of conquering the highest peak in Europe.
After a good night sleep and acclimatisation, Don Milla and his team received snow axe training, a crucial skill for self-rescue in case of falls.
Amid concerns about strong winds, Don Milla remained optimistic, trusting in the universe to provide favourable weather conditions for a successful summit bid.
Day six saw a heartfelt ascent of triumphs, trials, and the kindness of strangers. Don Milla’s Mount Elbrus expedition faced a major setback when he realised he had lost his summit night boots.
However, his dreams were saved by the kindness of his guide Anthony, who offered to lend him his boots. Despite an imperfect fit, Don Milla gratefully accepted the offer, overwhelmed with emotion by Anthony’s selfless act.
The heart-warming gesture reinvigorated Don Milla’s determination to reach the summit, trusting in the universe’s benevolence to guide him through the challenges ahead.
The final day was very challenging as Don Milla could only breathe through his mouth; however, he realised his dream with his international team.
Ghanaian adventurer Don Milla successfully summited Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, alongside his international team comprising Akin from Nigeria and Nancy from Kenya.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including altitude sickness, fatigue, and treacherous terrain, the team persevered and reached the summit.
Don Milla’s determination and faith in the universe’s benevolence drove him forward, even when his body faltered.
This triumph marks a significant milestone in Don Milla’s mountaineering journey, paving the way for future expeditions to Mount Everest and others.
