The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, says the future of private members bills in Ghana looks bleak following the refusal of President Akufo-Addo to sign them into law.
Speaker Bagbin says arguments that such bills put a strain on the country’s finances are untrue.
A private members bill that resulted in the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly called the anti-gay bill, is yet to become law following a legal tussle.
Speaking at a forum in Accra on private members bill, Mr Bagbin said law courts must intervene to improve the situation.
“I respectfully will want to urge the court to look at this matter that is before them expeditiously to resolve it or else, the future of private member bills in Ghana is very bleak. The constitution itself says there must be laws passed by Parliament and assented to by the president. The emphasis is on ‘and’ and not ‘all’ and so the two must go together before the bills become laws,” he stated.
