A member of pressure group, Occupy Ghana, Sydney Casely-Hayford wants Hajia Fati, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist who slapped a journalist recently to be prosecuted and jailed.
According to him, Hajia Fati will have enough time to reflect on her action if she goes to jail.
[contextly_sidebar id=”qCvLuZt1TzZaCrB5KPfDCDN4sOBMvofN”]Speaking on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue, Casely Hayford said Hajia Fati lied about mistaking the young lady for an onion seller and what she did was wrong.
“She has done the wrong thing and I will like to see this young lady take her to court, prosecute her and if possible, get her to spend some time in jail to enable her [Hajia Fati] rethink what she has done,” he said.
A reporter from Adom FM was slapped by Hajia Fati, an NPP sympathizer when she tried to take a picture of an altercation that was going on between she(Hajia Fati) and a suspended official of the party Sammy Crabbe, who tried to pick up a form at the NPP National Headquarters.
Hajia Fati later in an interview explained that she thought the reporter was a Sammy Crabbe’s agent who had been sent to take pictures for ulterior motives adding that she thought the journalist was an”onion seller”.
“The woman standing there did not look like a reporter. I thought it was one of Sammy Crabbe’s women who wanted to take pictures of me. The lady did not look like a reporter. She resembled an onion seller. She did not look like a reporter at all,” she said.
Don’t let Hajia Fati off the hook – OccupyGhana tells Multimedia
OccupyGhana, had earlier charged the Multimedia Group to commence civil proceedings against both Hajia Fati and the (NPP over the issue.
OccupyGhana insisted that prosecution is critical in such matters because it feels “that these attacks persist because of the failure, neglect or refusal to prosecute offenders.”
In a statement, the pressure group urged Multimedia “to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is done in this matter.”
Condemnation of assault
The Executive Director for Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has condemned the attack, describing it as an unfortunate incident.
He noted that the assault of the journalist indicates that the NPP’s headquarters was a danger zone for journalists as this incident is among many others recorded in recent times at the same location, which the party has remained silent.
‘Suit over the attack.’
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Affail Monney, has also condemned the attack, adding that the GJA was considering taking legal action against Hajia Fati.
The Multimedia Group, the parent company of Adom FM, has also filed a complaint at the Nima Police station and will go ahead with a civil suit against Hajia Fati over the attack.
