Ghana’s Technical Universities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to promote development in the Ghanaian hospitality and tourism industry.
The agreement is also to broaden international experiences of trainees in the field.
The agreement will allow the students of the technical universities to have practical exposure abroad.
Speaking to the media, Director of UMES’ International Development Program, Professor. Emmanuel Acquah said the new partnership will help technical students gain relevant expertise that will help them meet local industry demands.
“University of Maryland Eastern Shore will conduct training needs assessment on the hospitality and tourism human capital in Ghana, develop the capacity of instructors in hospitality and tourism institutions by offering on-the-job training and off-site training to improve their teaching skills, and establish and implement nationally standardized hospitality and tourism training programs with professional accreditation protocols or systems in line with international standard at the Ghanaian technical universities while ensuring that it meets local industry demands”.
Ing. Dr. Kwame Boakye who chaired the signing ceremony revealed that the agreement will be for 5 years and could be renewed after the deal period.
“The agreement is five years but like any relationship as time goes on it can be renewed if the need arises. The five years is a reference, whether two days or twenty years results must be shown for it. Hospitality and tourism is a major component of the country’s economy and must be developed into a real career”.
