Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has donated 1,000 bags of cement for the expansion and rehabilitation of the Bawku Central Mosque in the Upper East Region.
The donation is in fulfillment of a campaign promise made to the Muslim community prior to the 2016 general election.
The uncompleted Bawku Central Mosque, which was built in the 70’s, has not seen any major rehabilitation works.
It is against this backdrop that the Muslim community appealed for support from the then Vice presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia, who obliged to support them with one thousand bags of cement.
At a handing over ceremony at the central mosque, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo, said Dr. Bawumia was a man of his words.
“When the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia came around during the fasting period to pray with you for peace and development of this country, you appealed to him for support to complete and rehabilitate your central mosque. And today, he has directed him to come and present to you One thousand bags of cement he promised you”
Chairman of Bawku Central Mosque and Ansarul Islam Ustarz Umar, expressed their profound gratitude to the Vice President, adding that the support will significantly help in the expansion and rehabilitation of the mosque.
“Now, we are going to put in strategies to get support from all over the world so that we can start the serious construction of this mosque. You can see serious defects in the mosque and 1,000 bags may not be enough, but it will be the beginning of a massive construction work for the face-lift of this mosque”.
NPP Bawku Central Constituency Chairman, Yussif Salifu, lauded the support by the Vice President, saying, the Muslim community will forever be grateful his unflinching support to the Muslim community and Islam.
He also urged all Muslims especially those who are well to do, to emulate the Dr. Bawumia’s gesture by supporting to complete the construction of the mosque.
