A Kumasi-based radio station; Sikka FM has suspended one of its reporters, Kwabena Antwi, for allegedly making some defamatory remarks about Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah.
Mr. Kwabena Antwi is said to have made certain derogatory comments about the Regional Minister on several social media platforms.
There were earlier reports that the Regional Minister stormed the station, located at Krofrom, on Wednesday, with five military officers over a publication by the station and caused the arrest of a news presenter.
But a statement by the management of Sikka FM insisted that the Minister was at the station to seek clarification on an earlier publication and was accompanied by only one police officer.
The station also added that no one was arrested.
According to the station, the Regional Minister “visited us in an attempt to seek clarification about a publication on our network and that the discourse was civil, peaceful and without acrimony.”
“The honourable minister came with one bodyguard, a policeman to be specific, who did not make any arrests and did not create a scene as has also been reported in some circles.”
Kwabena Antwi, an intern with the station has been suspended indefinitely by management of the station as a result of the incident.
“Management however expresses its disdain at the fact that events surrounding the visit of the honourable minister have been misreported on social media by Mr. Antwi who is a newsroom intern. Mr. Antwi’s failure to exercise his discretion over the event is against our editorial policy and has been suspended indefinitely,” the statement added.
