The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh has warned persons who insult or label widows with names to desist or face the consequences in the future.
He said a section of politicians in Ghana who engaged in such acts must bow their heads in shame since describing a widow as ‘bloody’ is the highest form of insult and disgrace to widowhood in Ghana.
His comments come weeks after Minority MPs described the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Alhassan as a bloody widow during protests against the by-election violence in her constituency.
Dr Opoku-Prempeh who was speaking at a ceremony to present some items to 300 widows within the Manhyia South constituency condemned the conduct of the minority and indicated that they must be prepared to face the consequences for their actions.
“It is touching that in this country at this time, a section of politicians who should care for the poor and the vulnerable in the society decide to insult widowhood. I took the insult personally, because my mother is a widow, because my father is dead and my mother is not the one who killed my father. So for a politician to describe a widow as a bloody widow is the highest form of insult and disgrace that the effect will come on every politician who described the widow as that”, he warned
Donations
The Manhyia South MP has for the past years donated items to orphanages, churches, mosques, chiefs and traditional rulers in the Ashanti Region.
Each of the 300 widows received half-piece wax prints at a ceremony held at the Abbeys Park, a popular facility in Manhyia South constituency.
He emphasized that showing kindness to the vulnerable in the society especially widows was very important to him since the attention on such persons in terms of their needs is limited.
Dr Opoku Prempeh who doubles as Education Minister also presented 80 sewing machines to some apprentices learning sewing within the constituency.
The MP in his quest to improve sanitation within communities in the constituency also donated 40 waste bins to the Manhyia South sub-metro who will place them at vantage locations to prevent indiscriminate littering by residents.
He also presented five tricycles which will be used to cart the refuse from the waste-bins to a proper dumpsite when they are full.
The Ash-town Library also received some books from the Education Minister with the latter promising to restock the place periodically as they plan to construct a more spacious one in the community.
The construction of a library and a Police Post is underway at Potia, a community in the Manhyia South constituency.
He said there are other projects in the community like the transformation of the Abyss Park into an Astroturf and other facilities that will improve the lives of his constituents.
He indicated that he will continue to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable and ensure every member of the constituency benefit from his stewardship.
Dr Prempeh stressed that he is committed to helping eliminate poverty, noting that education and human empowerment are the best approaches to eliminating hunger, disease and poverty.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to Citi News showered blessings on the MP for the gesture.
