A lack of Twi interpreter at an Accra High Court on Tuesday compelled it to adjourned the trial of two Policemen and a driver involved in the robbery of a GCB Bank Bullion van at Mame Krobo near Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region in 2016.
When the matter was called, there was no Twi interpreter hence the matter was adjourned to April 15.
The two officers are General Lance Corporal Solomon Elvis Mensah, General Lance Corporal Daniel Kissi Abrokwah, and Hafisu Mohammed aka Danjuma, who is also a mechanic.
The two officers are already serving 36 months each for escaping from lawful custody. They are being held for attempted robbery, conspiracy and murder.
Mohammed, on the other hand, is being held for conspiracy.
The officers are alleged to have hatched the plan on August 16, 2016.
The policemen who were on duty at GN Bank (Now Savings and Loans) and GCB Bank respectively, discussed the robbery with Mohammed, who was their friend and also a taxi driver.
The officers then armed themselves with AK47 rifles and laid an ambush at a spot between Tease and Mame Krobo at about 1030 hours on the said day.
Mohammed drove his taxi towards Ekye Amanfrom to monitor the arrival of the bullion van.
Twenty Minutes later after the bullion van arrived Mohammed allegedly signalled the police officers who then opened fire, killing one Sarpong, the driver of the van with registration number GN1354-15.
A Policeman who was on board the van sustained injuries but he, however, managed to return fire compelling the two robbers to take cover in the bush.
The attackers called Mohammed who then picked them in his car in their bid to escape.
When the Police Command at Donkorkrom got wind of the robbery incident they mobilized men who arrested the three accused persons on board the taxi cab.
Upon the arrest, two AK 47 rifles, 23 rounds of ammunitions, a cutlass and two metal bars were found in the taxi.
The deceased driver’s body was deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.
Three other occupants on board the bullion van, however, escaped unhurt while the Policeman on board the van was treated and discharged at the Donkrokrom Presbyterian Hospital.
