The surety who stood for Helena Huang’s bail, Mohammed Bongbirigbum has appeared before the Tamale Court for failing to produce the suspect after she jumped bail.
The surety appealed for a period of one month to produce the suspect but the judge refused to grant the request.
He has instead been asked to produce two sureties; both government workers who earn more than GHc 3,000 cedis or present a landed property valued at more than GHc 130,000.
Mohammed Bongbirigbum entered a bail bond of GHc200,000 for Miss Huang who was arrested for attempting to smuggle four containers of rosewood timber out of Ghana.
The Police intercepted two trucks in Tamale loaded with two containers of rosewood belonging to the Chinese national.
The judge, His Honour justice Twumasi Appiah adjourned the case to 22nd May.
Huang’s company shutdown
Savannah Regional Minister, Salifu Adam Braimah ordered the closure of Brivywell Company, the timber firm owned by Helena Huang.
The firm, which is located in Yipala, a farming community near Damongo is said to be engaged in illegal logging and processing of rosewood, which has been banned, for export.
The minister has also set up a nine-member committee to investigate illegal logging activities in the region.
