The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has placed a partial ban on the use of motorbikes in the Chereponi and Saboba Districts following renewed violence there.
A statement signed by the Chairman of the Northern Regional Security Council, Salifu Saeed, after an emergency meeting on Tuesday, however, exempted certain persons from the ban, namely health workers, teachers, public servants and women.
The Northern REGSEC has also assured residents that the security agencies have put adequate measures in place to protect them as they go about their everyday activities.
“With immediate REGSEC announces a ban on the use of motorbikes in the Chereponi and Sabiba Districts. The exempted persons in this directive are health workers, teachers, public servants and women. Health Workers, Teachers and Public Servant must carry identification cards to enable them have that privilege. Furthermore, the use of the motorbikes is only permitted by persons named above, between 6:00am and 6:00pm and therefore no motorbike will be allowed after 6:00pm until further notice”, the statement said.
The REGSEC also assured public servants in the area and all well-meaning citizens that security agencies have put adequate mechanisms in place to ensure their safety as they go about their normal duties.
The statement added that any threats must be reported to the security agencies deployed in the area immediately.
“REGSEC also assures all and sundry that the commitment of the security agencies to effectively deal with this conflict is unshaken and no effort will be spared to ensure that the matter is quickly resolved.”
Continuous clashes between Anufuls and Chokosis in the past few days have left one person dead, with others injured.
16 suspects have so far been arrested by the Northern Regional command for their alleged involvement in the clashes.
Last month there were reprisal attacks in Chereponi, leaving many people displaced.
The people who are now internally displaced and living in a crowded space now struggle for food, water and clothes.
The National Peace Council has called for a swift implementation of the recommendations by the fact-finding committee on the Anuful/Konkomba conflict.
Programmes Manager for the Northern Regional Peace Council, Nuhu Abukari emphasized the need to implement the recommendations.
