Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region say they’re working round the clock to ensure that the four Northern Regional Municipal and District Chief Executives, who were involved in an accident, are completely out of danger.
The accident occurred on Monday when the officials were traveling in one car to Wa in the Upper West Region, to meet President Akufo-Addo for the launch of government’s ‘Rearing for foods and jobs’ programme.
The newly elected President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, NALAG, Hon. Bismark Baisie Nkum, who visited his colleagues on Tuesday morning together with other NALAG executives in Tamale, told Citi News the doctors have assured them that one of the men would be discharged today.
The accident involved DCE for Zabzugu District Assembly, Hon. Ahmed Abubakari Iddrisu, DCE for Gushiegu District, Hon. Musah Issah, DCE for Mion District, Hon. Mohammed Hashim Abdullah, and MCE for Nanumba North Municipal Assembly, Hon. Abdulai Yakubu.
In a statement issued by NALAG, its President, Hon. Bismark Baisie Nkum, who’s also DCE for Gomoa West in the Central Region, called on members of the association to join in praying for the victims in these trying times.
“In this trying time, the Association is calling on all Members – Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to join in praying for our brothers whilst they are receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. We stand by their respective families and wish them speedy recovery.”
“We encourage the doctors who have so far stabilized their condition to give them maximum attention and provide them with intensive medical treatment for them to recover fully.”
After visiting the victims at the Tamale Teaching Hospital together with NALAG General Secretary, Hon. Kokro Amankwah, the 1st Vice President, Hon. William Aduum and the Women Caucus Representative, Hon. Mariam Iddrisu to ascertain their conditions, Hon. Baisie Nkum said “We’re very glad comparing the state now to the news that we received, I think they’re very much better; and they’re in high spirit also. I am sure very soon they will join us in the line of duty. Already, I am told by the doctor that one of them will be discharged today; so that’s good news. Yes; it was a bad situation, but what we have seen this morning together with my colleagues; it’s far better” he noted.
Sharing his views on the decision by the four officials to travel in one car on an official assignment, Hon. Baisie Nkum said, “those are things that we would have to discuss to see whether it is appropriate or not. But also sometimes it’s because of the public perception about long convoy so we try as much as possible to avoid that sometimes to please the public. But I think this incident will now get people to appreciate what we do as chief executives and government officials; and that when they see vehicles moving in a long convoy it’s not necessarily for our benefit but just to work for the benefit of society”.
He however admitted that government officials would also have to take a look at their own security measures such as wearing seat belts while on the road.
Hon Baisie Nkum says in the meantime, NALAG is giving the victims morale support to be on their feet again; but will offer them other forms of assistance as time goes on.
The NALAG President also commended the doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital for the effort they’re putting in to stabilize their colleagues.
