A youth group has served notice that it will demonstrate tomorrow (September 23, 2019) over abandoned roads in the Volta Region.
The group in a press release signed by convenor, Joshuah Edem Tetteh, indicated that “Roads started by the previous government have been abandoned by the current government leading to a further deterioration of the roads”, increasing the cost of construction of same roads which they say is “preventing the poor taxpayer from having value for money coupled with the many accidents and the discomfort” road users have to go through.
The group earlier gave the government a September 15 ultimatum to bring the contractors back onto the roads in the Volta Region.
Major road projects such as the famous Eastern Corridor Road, the Dualization of the Ho Major Roads and the Ho-Aflao roads are in terrible conditions and are barely motorable.
A social media campaign with the hashtag #FixVoltaRoads got the new media flooded with pictures and videos of some of the worst parts of the bad roads in the Region.
In a Citi News, interview, the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Achibald Yao Letsa said the roads were being repackaged under different financial facilities to enhance the “financing of work on the deplorable roads”.
Mr Letsa said work should be expected on the “roads by September 2019” but that is yet to manifest.
The group in its statement called on the general public to join in the demonstration to “mount pressure on the government to pay attention to the bad roads in the Volta Region”.
The statement said, “participants for this demonstration will include Driver Unions, Road Users, Market Women, commercial motor Riders, the Youth and members of the general public” who are all expected to be clad in red.
The group is expected to converge for the “peaceful demonstration” in Kpeve opposite the lorry park in the South Dayi Constituency at 6:30 am tomorrow.
