The driver of an empty hearse who installed unauthorized sirens in his car to beat traffic was today arrested on the Pokuase-Amasaman Highway by the War Against Indiscipline team.
Though ambulances are allowed to use sirens in their operations, hearses, which are vehicles used to convey dead bodies, are not.
However, many hearse drivers have been abusing the sirens and causing a public nuisance.
But luck eluded this particular driver who was arrested alongside scores of other drivers for using the shoulders of the road or having fake DV plates.
Member of the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Headquarters, ASP Simon Tenkuu speaking to Citi News after the exercise said the arrest of the hearse driver will serve as a deterrent to other drivers who operate contrary to the law.
“If you can remember we were here last week and we cautioned some of these drivers, those we arrested last week were cautioned and pardoned. But this time around we will let them go to court. There was another unusual scene, there is a difference between an ambulance and a hearse. An ambulance as we all know is used for emergency situations whilst the hearse is for corpses; they carry dead bodies. But you realize the hearse drivers abuse traffic so much that this morning we personally witnessed one, driving towards oncoming traffic with so much recklessness and indiscipline. He was also apprehended to serve as an example and we can also see that even though the build-up is quite huge but because of the decency and sanity, traffic is flowing steadily”.
The Vehicles of drivers without licenses were impounded and sent to the Ga West Divisional Police Headquarters, whereas drivers with licenses were given chits to appear before the Abeka Motor Court. Drivers with fake DV plates were in lower numbers today.
