The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Germany Chapter has supported calls for an independent audit of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary results by the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Mahama has rejected the results of the polls, saying it’s flawed.
“With the incompetence, the EC has shown, it will be useful for us to do a forensic audit of the EC’s own systems and numbers to come on what the final number from the EC is,” Mr. Mahama had said in an interview with VOA News.
The Germany chapter of the party said, Mr. Mahama’s stance is a demonstration of statesmanship.
According to the chapter, Mr. Mahama “understands the socio-economic and political implication of invoking the highest court of jurisdiction.”
It further said disagreements of the results show the Electoral Commission lacks competence.
“In the light of the gross arithmetical errors committed by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the NDC Germany Chapter wishes to convey its support to the leader and flagbearer of the NDC in the 2020 general election, President John Dramani Mahama, for the show of statesmanship and willingness to use consensual approach to resolve the mathematical inaccuracies of the polls.
“The Chapter agrees with the former President that going to court is one of the democratic processes but should only be invoked after all other processes have been exhausted due to the adversarial nature of the court system. As a former president of Ghana, he understands the socio-economic and political implication of invoking the highest court of jurisdiction and has, therefore, resorted to using other means that could equally resolve the current arithmetical challenges that the Electoral Commission (EC) has clearly demonstrated they lack the competency to compute.”
NDC’s disagreements with 2020 results
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the winner of the December 7 polls on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, despite concerns raised by the opposition NDC.
NDC’s presidential candidate, Mr. John Dramani Mahama subsequently declared the party’s unwillingness to accept the outcome of the general elections.
Describing the outcome as the “real stolen verdict,” Mr. Mahama at a press conference on Thursday, December 10, 2020, said the party will audit the outcomes of the poll to inform its next step.
The party has thus embarked on a series of street protests nationwide to express concerns to register its displeasure.
Aside from grievances at the constituency level, the NDC has also rejected the outcome of the presidential election which saw Nana Akufo-Addo declared President-elect.
During their protests, the supporters mostly chant “No Mahama, No Peace” in a bid to have former president John Mahama declared the winner of the 2020 presidential polls.
