Developing the leader within you is a book written by John C. Maxwell that teaches the ropes of becoming a better leader. This book helps in uncovering which stage one is as far as leadership is concerned. It also helps in learning new principles that work in leadership. John C. Maxwell gets encouragement to devote much of his time in developing leaders by giving testimonies about how he has helped them in their leadership skills.
Leadership can be taught
Leadership is developed not discovered is a line said in ‘Developing the leader within you’. “The truly born leader” will always emerge; but to stay on top, natural leadership characteristics must be developed.
After John C. Maxwell worked with thousands of people who wanted to be leaders, he figured out that they all fall under one of the four categories or levels of leadership and those are leading leader, learned leader, latent leader, limited leader. The first one is a leading leader who is born with leadership skills, has seen leadership models throughout their life, has learned leadership throughout training and has the self-discipline to become a great leader. These leaders are top tier leaders.
The next is learned leaders who have seen leadership most of their life, have the self-discipline to be a greater leader and have learned leadership throughout the training. This type of leader wasn’t born with the leadership they got there through learning to be a leader.
Then there is a latent leader who is learning to be a leader through training and has the self-discipline to be a good leader. These leaders are more new to leadership but are working on becoming good leaders.
Lastly, the limited leader has little or no exposure to leaders and leadership training but has a desire to become a leader. They are people who dream to be leaders and haven’t started their journey to become a leader.
