Parts of the capital, Accra, experienced severe flooding on Monday morning, May 15, following heavy rainfall.
The rain continued for approximately four hours, resulting in significant traffic congestion on major highways such as the Ofankor-Kumasi Highway and the Weija-Kasoa stretch.
Due to the flooded roads, motorists were stranded in affected areas.
Motorists had to navigate their way using a single lane as sections of the roads were submerged.
Residents living in flood-prone areas faced difficulties commuting to their workplaces due to the heavy rainfall.
Citi News’ Kwaku Aduamah Ansah reported that vehicles travelling from Taifa to Circle had to proceed at a slow pace due to the flooded roads.
A commercial driver in Taifa expressed frustration with the recurring flooding and called upon the authorities to address the situation by implementing proper drainage systems.
He emphasized that choked gutters worsen the problem and lead to traffic disruptions.
Abdulai Mahama, a civil engineer, attributed the frequent flooding on major highways to the negligence of local assemblies.
In an interview with Citi News, Mahama urged the local assemblies to take responsibility and actively work towards resolving the recurring issue of flooding.
He emphasized the importance of proper urban planning and infrastructure development in mitigating the impact of heavy rains and ensuring the smooth flow of water during such events.
