The Upper East Regional Security Coordinating Council has reiterated that the ban on the sale and consumption of ruminants including goats, cattle and sheep is still in force.
The council had initially asserted that the ban would be lifted ahead of the Eid celebrations should it attain a 70% vaccination rate, but there has been an increase in the number of deaths from anthrax.
In a statement sighted by Citi News, the Council added that persons who intend to slaughter animals as part of the celebrations should do so under the strict supervision of Veterinary and Environmental Health Officers.
The Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Alhaji Yussif Umar Al-Imam has therefore urged Muslims to abide by the directive of the Regional Security Council.
“The sacrifice is not obligatory that if you don’t do it you will sin, no. If you do it, you will be rewarded and if you don’t do it you don’t sin against God. The Hajj is a pillar of Islam but during COVID-19 people were unable to go, so it is like this one. This anthrax is a very bad disease, so one should be cautious about it,” he added.
