In a heartwarming turn of events, the once-dilapidated Atiteti bridge in the Anloga district of the Volta Region has been rehabilitated from its dangerous state.
This remarkable feat follows Citi News’ report of an unfortunate incident earlier this year when a four-year-old girl tragically lost her life after plunging into the river beneath the bridge.
In response to a fervent appeal from local residents and an unwavering commitment to corporate social responsibility, the Ghana Gas company took on the task of rehabilitating the bridge.
In January of this year, Citi News brought attention to the perilous state of the Atiteti Bridge in the Anloga District of the Volta Region.
The report shed light on the imminent danger faced by commuters using this bridge and the urgent need for its repair.
Desperate residents made a heartfelt appeal to the government for action, emphasizing that this dilapidated bridge was a vital link to neighbouring areas.
The Atiteti Bridge, which had served the community for over 30 years, had deteriorated significantly, posing a severe risk to those who relied on it for transportation.
Tragically, the report recounted an incident where a four-year-old girl lost her life after falling into the river due to the bridge’s deteriorating condition.
In response to Citi News‘ report, the management of the Ghana Gas Company stepped up and pledged to undertake the rehabilitation of the bridge as part of their corporate social responsibility.
The Atiteti Bridge has currently undergone a remarkable transformation. It has been reconstructed using concrete to ensure the safety of all users.
During a visit to the area, the Assembly Member and traditional leaders shared their thoughts with Citi News.
“I want to congratulate Citi TV for helping us report on this bridge which deteriorated three years ago. We are grateful as a community to the management and staff of Citi TV. I want to use this medium to also express my heartfelt gratitude to the Member of Parliament, Richard Kwami Sefe for making efforts to have the bridge fixed. I want to thank the Ghana Gas Company for coming to our aid, and we are grateful as a people,” said the Assembly Member for the Atiteti Electoral Area, Raphael Agbanavor.
The Member of Parliament for Anlo, Richard Kwami Sefe also spoke to Citi News on maintenance of the bridge.
He assured, “We are educating our people that heavy-duty trucks such as the 22-tonner cargo trucks will not use this bridge except the lighter ones to ensure a prolonged lifespan of the bridge.”
He expressed his appreciation to Citi TV for throwing light on the poor state of the Atiteti bridge.
“I just want to thank Citi TV and the CEO of Ghana Gas because when we had a meeting via Zoom, the CEO of Ghana Gas said he saw the challenge, and they quickly rallied to organize some GH¢76,000 for us to support the rehabilitation of the basement which has subsequently been done.”
Currently, the bridge has ensured easy and safe mobility of residents, taxi drivers, and tricycle (Okada) riders as well as goods from the Atiteti community to adjoining areas.
