A former Cape Verde President, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, has noted with concern that the existence of Islamic Jihadists and other error groups threaten the vision of the construction of Sovereign States in Africa.
As Guest Speaker of the University for Development Studies (UDS) 6th African Leadership Lecture series held at the Tamale City campus, Dungu, he raised this concern in a presentation on the “Vision of the construction of Sovereign States.”
He has thus underscored the need to promote peace, security and national solidarity on the continent.
According to him, corruption and political crisis are also affecting Africa’s vision to build sovereign states.
While admitting that there no perfect institutions, he said despite Africa’s institutionalized democracies, there are several dysfunctional institutions of state.
He recommended that African leaders should consider capacity building and harness human resources as a major priority towards realizing the construction of Sovereign States.
The Ex-Cape Verde President said African societies should be empowered with modern technology tools to promote socio-economic development.
He said African governments should transform their societies by investing in priority areas such as education, health and agriculture.
He called for a multifaceted approach to fight abject poverty which he described as the root cause of Africa’s underdevelopment.
He further advised African leaders to share constructive ideas needed to overcome the continent’s myriad of development challenges.
