The Multimedia Group is still waiting on an official communication from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) after one of its reporters, from Adom FM, was assaulted at the party’s headquarters.
This is despite the fact the perpetrator of the assault, Hajia Fati, offered a public apology for the incident.
[contextly_sidebar id=”eskyjH2yamBU8H1kvpsjgG0czjPmSTGh”]Adom FM’s News Editor, Afia Pokua, said the company expected an official communique from the NPP on the matter of the apology.
Since the incident, she said her company hasn’t had “any verbal communication on this matter, and we haven’t had any official communication on this matter.”
“We wrote officially to the NPP and they haven’t given a response to our complaints, so we don’t know who this apology is directed to. We want to know. If it is directed to us then it is only fair that an official response comes from the party to us.”
The assault occurred after Hajia Fati forcefully prevented Sammy Crabbe, a suspended official of the party, from picking up forms to contest for the NPP’s chairmanship position.
The reporter, Ohemaa Sakyiwaa, said she tried to take a photo when she was slapped in the face by Hajia Fati.
The NPP has condemned the act and distanced itself from same, ansd promised that journalists will be safe, but did not boldly apologize for the act.
The party in a statement copied to citinewsroom.com on Tuesday, however said it was conducting its own investigation into the matter.
Is the apology for us?
On Wednesday, Hajia Fati, said she was sorry about the incident, but Afia Pokua noted that the apology may not have been targeted at the victim especially as neither her name not that of Multimedia was mentioned.
“In the apology, Hajia Fati did not mention the media house in question or the reporter. We are a little bit in doubt as to whether the apology is really directed at us or directed at all the other people who have fallen victim to Hajia Fati’s attacks.”
The Multimedia Group filed a complaint at the Nima Police station following the assault along with a civil suit against Hajia Fati over the attack.
Even if the company accepts the apology, Afia Pokua said the suit was still going to go ahead.
The matter is really out of our hands. We have submitted our report to the police. We have indicated submission under the law, and we are willing to go through the process. We all know that according to the constitution, prosecutorial powers are left to the AG, and the AG is acting through the police. So it is really out of my hands. Whether or not there is an apology or whether or not we are going to accept the apology is immaterial to this matter,” she explained.
