The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Employment Committee, Dr Kwabena Donkor wants President Nana Akufo-Addo to seek the help of Ghana’s living former Presidents to deal with the challenge of political vigilantism.

According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Pru East, the expertise and stature of the statesmen can be tapped to fashion out a solution to the phenomenon, which many say is detrimental to the nation’s growing democracy.

[contextly_sidebar id=”nFp0UwA25qv4auBJLZt7YnUj4QK75K9K”]Speaking to Citi News, the Pru East MP warned that political vigilantism is working against development and needed to be rooted out of the society.

“We cannot accept this. It is not in our national interests and this is where the role of our former Presidents; His Excellency President Rawlings, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as statesmen, is going to be crucial. They can come in and advise the current President.”

The MP’s comment comes in the wake of recent reports of the emergence of a vigilante group at Asamakanse in the Eastern Region believed to have ties to the NDC.

This followed the outdooring of a different group in Kumasi known as “The Hawks” during the NDC Unity Walk in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC has however dissociated itself from this group.

Observers have urged the NDC and the governing New Patriotic Party, two known culprits in this regard, to dissolve all vigilante groups within their respective parties.

Most members of such groups are known to be supporters of Ghana’s two main political parties.

In 2017, the Government set up a taskforce to investigate and deal with the circumstances leading to political hooliganism by some aggrieved members of the governing NPP, particularly in the Northern Region.

The taskforce was led by a Deputy Minister for Energy, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta, and included the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli, a Presidential Staffer, Clara Napaga Tia Sulemana, and Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr Clifford Braimah.
