GHL Bank has constructed a borehole and water filtration system for the Mampong School for the deaf in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region at a value of GHC 55,000.
This is to help ease the water problem in the school.
It has a reverse osmosis system installed which is able to filter raw water into pure water for domestic use.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Christopher Charles Oppong, the Chairman of GHL Bank Corporate Social Responsibility Team said the gesture was in line with the bank’s corporate identity.
“This is part of GHL Bank’s corporate social responsibility. We have as part of our core targets, schools, that is, educational facilities and health facilities. And we are very concerned about the living conditions of students and health workers. Four years ago we did a survey and realized that this school needed water desperately so we decided to give them a borehole. And the idea is to give them good drinking water to reduce the tendency of them getting sick and live comfortable lives on campus.”
He added that the project was to ensure a healthy environment for teachers and students of the school.
“The idea behind this is to ensure that life on campus becomes vibrant to help teaching and learning go on in a healthy environment so that diseases that can be avoided is dealt with. This will also save some quality time for teachers and students who at first would have to go in search of water. Health and education is one of our primary objectives as a financial institution and it is in line with our long term corporate goals, as a house financing bank.”
Mr. Christopher Oppong finally called on other corporate institutions to channel their corporate activities into helping the school.
This he said will to help make students more productive and reduce their dependency ratio.
“Corporate institutions, government and NGOs should intervene in these kind of things. We would spend national resources on people who are not able to enjoy these things when they come out of school but once we are able to equip them with what they need to develop in school they become able men and women and productive. This will move the agenda of total development forward and reduce the total dependency of the nation.”
This was after a short commissioning and handing over ceremony of the project to the school.
The school authorities were appreciative but called on the management of the bank to also institute an award scheme.
They believe it will help motivate needed but brilliant students of the school.
