The trial movement of an Accra-Nsawam train on the rehabilitated rail lines experienced a mishap on Thursday when it derailed en route to Accra.
The train was moving from Nsawam to Accra when the incident happened at Tsinton near Papase in the Eastern Region.
Although there were some journalists and staff of the railway service on board, there was no casualty.
A Technical team is currently working to put the train back on track.
Traffic Manager of the Railway Development Authority, Comfort Awinya, who spoke to Citi News described it as a minor derailment and assured that the journey would soon continue.
“What you just saw is just a minor derailment. It’s just one truck that derailed and these are some of the reasons why we decided to come on the line as a test run to see if the line is smooth for us to go and also to send a message to our customers, our passengers who have been waiting for us to resume operations.”
“This is nothing serious, our boys are there. We have abled men on board the train and you saw some carrying jacks and ramps on board the train so this is what they are doing right now and we will soon be going,” she said.
The Accra-Nsawam train service was suspended for rehabilitation work on the railway lines over a year ago.
The train will be having its mid-morning service from Accra to Nsawam at 10:00am and will be docking at Odaw, Achimota, Dome, Amasaman, Kotoku and Papase.
The first-class coach will be charged at GHc5 per person and the second class at GHc4.
Some staff of the Ghana Railway Service have since expressed their excitement over the revamping of the service.
