The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, has charged his men to prioritise the protection of lives and property before, during and after the Christmas season.
He said the service has implemented sophisticated operational tactics to ensure a crime-free celebration.
The IGP further cautioned the public to be self-security conscious.
He was speaking at the launch of Operation Father Christmas, an annual crime combat operation undertaken by the police ahead Christmas and New Year season.
“I urge all members of the General public to prioritise their personal security and bear in mind tha tit is their primary responsibility to do so.”
The IGP also urged churches and other religious bodies to “manage their security properly.”
“You [the religious bodies] are to corporate with us and give us maximum support to fight crimes and keep you safe,” he added.
The Christmas period is expected to be dominated by Christian events because of the nature of the period.
But the period will also mark the culmination of Ghana’s year of return, with many visitors from the diaspora expected in the country.
The launch of Operation Father Chrismas was marked by a procession through some principal streets of Accra.
The now annual operation is part of arrangements to ensure an incident and crime-free Christmas period.
In 2018, about 14,000 policemen were deployed to commercial centres, including markets, and other areas known to be prone to crime as part of the Operation Father Christmas to maintain law and order during the festive season.
