Having graduated well-over four thousand students across 41 undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, Central University continues its mandate to train transformational leaders to serve the human capital needs of Ghana and beyond.
Academic life and new programmes
In a period where funding of tertiary education as well student attrition is becoming a challenge, Ghana’s largest private Christian University reports of strides and achievements in the areas of institutional capacity and service delivery.
Indeed, in the areas of teaching and learning the university prides itself on an effective system that has ensured that the academic calendar remains on course, disruptions of Covid 19 notwithstanding. A highly supervised 60-40 hybrid lecturer delivery system has accounted for this positive result.
To make its presence more felt and to bring its programmes closer to the public, CU has from this academic year opened an Accra city campus at Christ Temple, Abossey Okai. All business, social science, nursing and law programs formerly offered in Mataheko now run on this new Accra city campus.
Central University has received accreditation for a number of new programmes including:
• 18month MBA in Agribusiness
• 18month MBA in Marketing
• BSc Agric Economics
• B Divinity
• BSc Environmental Engineering
• MPhil Economics
• MA Sacred Ministry
• Post Graduate Diploma in Education
• MA Education
• MPhil Education
These are all programmes designed to tackle various aspects of the Human Capital needs of the country.
The 18 month MBA programmes will phase out the 24 month options; the Education programmes target teachers and educational administrators who must now – according to GES standards – demonstrate higher intellectual attainments in theory and practice of Education and Educational Administration.
These programmes will run on the Accra and Miotso Campuses and will come on stream in Kumasi as well in due course.
CU also offers the UK-based Awards for Training & Higher Education diploma programmes.
There are options in:
• Health & Social Care,
• Information & Digital Technologies
• Business and
• Education & Training.
Graduates from these programmes may join CU from L100 through to the postgraduate depending on the level at which they exit the ATHE.
Furthermore, the university has just signed an MoU with Gordon College in the US for 2yr split-site degree programmes. Programmes offered for this arrangement are Computer Science, Marketing, Finance, Communication, Economics and Social Sciences.
School of Pharmacy Leads The Way
Being the only private university offering pharmacy in the country, Central University was commended when on Wednesday 23rd March, 2022 a delegation from the Pharmacy Council led by Professor Mahamah Duwiejua, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bill B. Puplampu at his office at Miotso.
In their assessment statement, the delegation said that they were very impressed by the quality of teaching and learning at the School of Pharmacy and congratulated the Vice Chancellor and his management team for supporting the Dean, Professor Kwasi Ohemeng, to lead the school to such repute. They disclosed that interaction with many graduates of the School of Pharmacy, 15 of whom currently work at the Pharmacy Council, confirmed the high calibre of training Central University is offering its Pharmacy students.
Facilities and Development
With the issue of practical health delivery on the main campus, the construction of a 30-bed clinic is underway at Miotso. The project is supported by the Holy Ghost Temple of ICGC. The project marks the 1st Phase of university clinic, which eventually will culminate in a teaching hospital in the near future.
To make the Miotso campus more user-friendly, the new SRC administration has recently commissioned a new bus shelter at the Miotso campus.
Extracurricular activities
In terms of extra-curricular activities, Central University is on April 20th staging the next event of its literary series and jazz show dubbed “Poetry under the Eagle”. Hosted at the Eagle Square, a magnificent landmark space of CU’s Miotso Campus, the concept takes inspiration from the boundless resilience and dexterity of the Eagle.
The Upcoming event features the Venerable Prof. Kofi Anyidoho, a literary scholar and poet laureate of the University of Ghana, who is expected to delight patrons with his lyrical compositions of vintage poetry across various epochs and themes.
The special event is under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bill Puplampu, himself a lover of poetry, and organised by the Department of Communications Studies and Media Studies. The literary showpiece aims to provide opportunity and platform for staff and students to showcase their talents in poetry recitals, live music, acting, song ministration and other forms of art. “Poetry under the Eagle” is envisioned to help members of the university community relieve stress and develop their creative talents.
Ultimately, it reaches out to illustrious exponents on the national literary landscape, positioning CU as a growing centre of partnership in the arts.
