Assembly members in Bawku in the Upper East Region say they will continue to boycott all national events until peace returns to the area.
The assembly members on March 6, 2023, boycotted the 66th Independence Day celebration citing the insecurity in Bawku which has in recent times recorded some causalities.
Some of the Assembly members speaking to Citi News said, “we still call on the government to look into the matter very well. As we said earlier we may not participate in other activities, we don’t have our freedom, so we cannot participate in such activities.
“Until peace returns to the area, we, the assembly members will not participate in any activities, we are peace-loving and we think that dialogue is the way to go. If the government continues to be adamant, we the members will also continue to remain adamant in our stance until peace and security are restored”.
The protracted chieftaincy dispute in Bawku has left scores of people dead and others sustaining injuries.
About 10 people have been reported dead in recent disturbances.
Students posted to Senior High Schools within the Bawku Municipality have since rejected the admissions offered them.
